Blog: My First Headline Conference!

This year, Headline’s annual sales conference was held at 195 Piccadilly, the venue which hosts the BAFTAs. Therefore, the stage was set for a night of glamour, cocktails and emotional speeches. Whilst backless sequinned dresses were thin on the ground, and the speeches were about the world of publishing rather than teary acceptances of awards, there was nevertheless a strong sense of glamour and excitement as the entire Headline staff donned their gladrags and mingled with authors and retailers alike.

Blog: The Continued Rise of the Book Trailer

You know how it works: the most engaging/cryptic/bloody/scary/poignant 30 seconds of a feature-length blockbuster Hollywood movie are carefully and painfully selected over a number of weeks, and compiled by a crack team of film buffs to make that picture seem completely unmissable. Film trailers have been drawing us in for decades, driving film-goers in their millions to the cinema to catch the latest flick on the big screen.

Living With Evil

Cynthia Owen

Cynthia Owen grew up in Ireland, went to the local convent school, said her prayers and took her first communion with all the other girls in her class. But behind the façade of respectability lurked a hideous reality.Cynthia was just eight years old when she was sexually abused by her father amongst others. Shortly before her eleventh birthday she was made pregnant and, minutes after giving birth to the baby, Cynthia watched in horror as her own mother murdered the tiny infant, named Noleen, by repeatedly stabbing her with a knitting needle. Cynthia's mother then wrapped the baby girl in a plastic bag, dumped her in an alleyway and made her daughter go back to school and pretend nothing had ever happened. After enduring many more years of rape and violence, Cynthia came forward and reported her abuse and Noleen's death. Finally, in 2007, after a fifteen-year legal fight to have her baby girl formally identified, the jury at the 'Dun Laoghaire Baby' inquest declared that the baby found dead in an alleyway thirty-four years previously was Noleen Murphy, the daughter of Cynthia Owen.Cynthia's is a horrific story of brutality and loss, but ultimately, it is an account of love, immense bravery and her fight for justice in Noleen's name.

Blog: Christmas TV Round-up

As we all know, Christmas is a time for reflection, rest, and seeing your loved ones. More importantly, it’s the only time of the year when it is acceptable to fill a bath with twiglets and watch The Muppets’ Christmas Carol (at least it is in my house). So here’s a quick rundown of this year’s festive TV highlights. Monday 17th THE FABULOUS BAKER BROTHERS DO CHRISTMAS (9:00pm, More4) Everybody’s favourite baking duo have cooked up 12 mouthwatering dishes for the 12 days of Christmas. Forget the sprouts, how about whisky-smoked salmon? Bosh. Tuesday 18th BRADLEY WIGGINS: A VERY BRITISH CHAMPION (8:00pm, More4) Aah Wiggo, is there anything he can’t do? More4 are repeating their documentary about the mod, god and newly crowned Sports Personality of the Year. Friday 21st UNIVERISTY CHALLENGE CHRISTMAS SPECIAL (7:30pm, BBC2) ‘Why are we watching this? I never know any of the answers and I just—Hydrochloric acid?! Oh, it was John Milton. Still I was close. Anyway, why are we watching this?’ Get those answers in quick to avoid a Paxo stuffing… Saturday 22nd STRICTLY COME DANCING (6:30pm, BBC1) Our own Bruno Tonioli and his fellow judges will be presiding over this year’s final. Expect laughs, tears and bauble puns aplenty. Christmas Day Betty’s done her speech, you’ve scrubbed all the goose fat off the oven door, and you’re just about hoping that John Lewis snowman gets run over on the motorway. What better way to calm down than a repeat of a documentary about Eddie Stobart lorries on Channel 5? Cracking stuff! Alternatively… DOWNTON ABBEY (8:45pm, ITV1) David Mitchell and Benedict Cumberbatch aren’t the biggest of fans, but the rest of country will be tuning in to see half the Downton lot off on their summer hols whilst the others prepare for the Thirsk Country Fair. Here’s hoping for extending scenes of Maggie Smith guessing the weight of a cake with acerbic asides. Boxing Day Sky Atlantic treat us to a show about Richard E. Grant staying in expensive hotels whilst Channel 4 go with hairy-footed, sword-fest, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. At just over seventeen hours long, expect scenes of an Elven nature. And finally, everyone’s favourite hapless heroine Miranda Hart kicks off series three of her eponymous outing with a festive special.

Wife, Interrupted

Amy Molloy

My story begins where most women hope theirs will end - with a big, white wedding. After all, isn't that how every good fairy tale finishes?I thought so. And at 23, in love and engaged, it seemed my 'happy ever after' was secure...That is until the man of my dreams died three weeks into our marriage. Look at me now: a 23 year old widow. You'd never guess. I've learnt to hide it well.Because the way I saw it, there were only two options...A) Dress in black, become a recluse and watch my wedding video on a loop?ORB) Decide falling in love again is out of the question and choose an easy, uncomplicated alternative - sex...Funny, powerful, and painfully honest, WIFE, INTERRUPTED examines the complicated process of grieving - and proves that sometimes the most unthinkable things can be the most comforting.

Laurie Frankel, author of Goodbye For Now, describes how social media inspired the concept behind her novel.
