About Us

Headline was founded in 1986 and as a small independent publishing company won the prestigious Publisher of the Year Award in 1992. Subsequently we have become a thriving division of the publishing giant Hachette UK.

Headline has an outstanding track record in publishing both fiction and non-fiction. On our fiction list, giant commercial brand names including Martina Cole, Jill Mansell, Sheila O'Flanagan, Simon Scarrow and Penny Vincenzi rub shoulders with the Orange Prize-winning Andrea Levy and other award-winning and No. 1 bestsellers such as Neil Gaiman, Victoria Hislop and Jed Rubenfeld. Headline's non-fiction programme is equally eclectic, including autobiographies from Jo Brand and Sir Bobby Charlton, Geraint Anderson's shocking exposé of city life CITY BOY, cookery books from bestsellers Mary Berry and Gennaro Contaldo, the business must-have title THE 80 MINUTE MBA by Richard Reeves and John Knell, and Lawrence Dallaglio's hilarious RUGBY TALES.

GETTING PUBLISHED

We recommend that writers submit manuscripts to us through a literary agent, and the vast majority of our authors have taken this route. We do also consider unsolicited submissions for both our fiction and non-fiction lists (and have published them). The area in which we specialise is highly commercial and therefore very competitive, so please read through our guidelines carefully first to see if we would be the appropriate publisher for your work.

Submissions guidelines:

Fiction

Genres:  Literary, Thriller, Crime, Historical, Romance, Saga, Horror, Young Adult
Length:  Approximately 90,000 - 150,000 words
Genres not published:  Short Story Collections, Novellas, Children’s, Poetry, Plays, Erotica

Non-fiction

Genres:  Memoir, Adventure, History, Business, Humour, Lifestyle, True Crime, Sport
Length:  Approximately 90,000 - 150,000 words

If your work matches these criteria, please send the first five consecutive chapters (or around 100 pages) and a short synopsis to:

The Fiction Submissions Editor or Non-fiction Submissions
Headline Publishing Group
338 Euston Road
London
NW1 3BH

The synopsis should be one to two pages in length. In the case of fiction, it should consist of a brief résumé of the plot, including the ending. The script should be typed in 12-point and double-spaced – we’re not able to consider handwritten manuscripts. Please also enclose an SAE envelope, large enough for the return of your manuscript, in case it proves unsuitable for our list. If you don’t include an SAE we will recycle the script after consideration if we do not wish to discuss it further.

We are unable to accept any responsibility for the loss of, or damage to, any scripts that are sent to us, so please do keep a copy of your work.

We aim to assess your submission and contact you with our decision within six weeks of receipt, but we are not able to offer any editorial advice or feedback concerning your work if we decide not to take it on.
