Get to know Team Bookends

We thought we’d give you a little glimpse into what we’re up to this weekend, including what we’re reading, what we’re enjoying on TV and what we’re getting up to over the weekend!

Aimee

Watching:

I’m reeling from The Handmaid’s Tale and its brilliant acting, casting, plot and cinematography. I’m counteracting this classy choice by continuing to watch reruns of Gladiators on YouTube. Even though it was shot over 20 years ago, the fitness levels of these people still boggles the mind and is encouraging me to go to the gym more. Who knew that a show that started when I was 2 years old would be influencing me now!

Reading:

I found myself woefully behind my Goodreads reading challenge target (100 books this year) so I’ve been on a bit of a binge. Over the last week I’ve read 5 books (The Debutante and Other Stories by Leonora Carrington, What is not yours is not yours by Helen Oyeyemi, A Court of Thorns and Roses By Sarah J Maas, Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur and The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas) and have started a sixth (Welcome to Night Vale by Joseph Fink & Jeffrey Cranor). I have a tbr pile that is growing by the second and surrounded as I am with so many books, I’m very happy!

What I’m up to:

I’m moving house mid-July so there’s no time like the present for looking over everything that’s accumulated over the last four years and deciding whether or not it’s needed. I’m getting ready to donate lots of bags of clothes and objects to charity shops, and many, many books too (unsurprisingly!). How Not to Kill Your Plants is providing me with lots of design inspiration for the new place and I’m going to try so hard not to let any future plants I own die under my care.

Alice

Watching:

My husband loves ‘Great British Menu’ so we have been watching that, which is also helpful for deciding where to eat out next!

Reading:

Have recently re-read The Handmaid’s Tale after watching the first episode of the incredible TV series. Hadn’t read it since I had children and now find Offred’s separation from her daughter too painful to read.

What I’m up to:

Am trying to encourage my kids to share my love of history, so have been spending weekends dragging them around various castles. Hampton Court was brilliant!

Helena

Watching:

Don’t judge me – but I’ve become fully obsessed with Love Island over the past few days. I sit down with my housemates every single evening to watch it…it’s a guilty pleasure!

Reading:

I’ve managed to get my hands on a copy of Rachel Joyce’s latest book The Music Shop…I loved The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and can’t wait to get started on this one. But I do need to get through it quickly as my mum perked up as soon as she saw it sitting on the kitchen table.

What I’m up to:

I’m off back home to the countryside this weekend – looking forward to one long weekend of catching up with friends, family and not having to travel on the tube!
