The moving and evocative story of youthful dreams, and what happens to them, as told by one of the bestselling sportswriters in the country

In the spring of 1964 more than 50,000 people turned out to watch the two-legged semi-final of the FA Youth Cup between Manchester City and Manchester United. It was a time of great hope and excitement: a new era was to be ushered in, with the virtues of youth personified in the Beatles and Harold Wilson - and in the teams that played. But what happened next? For some, like George Best, it was the start of a golden era of success; but for others it was the highlight of a career that never happened. In Shindler's compelling third book of his Manchester trilogy, he captures an era of high expectation, talking to many who played in or watched these famous games; but he also movingly portrays what went wrong for others.

Confessions of a Single Mum

Amy Nickell
Authors:
Amy Nickell

When Amy Nickell left university, she managed to nab herself a real life paid job as a celebrity reporter in London town. She literally got paid to ask Robert Downey Junior out for Nando's, while living with her gay best friend, their Harry Styles cardboard cutout and their pet toad, Snoop Frog, and drank prosecco way before it was in fashion. Things were good, they were fun, they definitely weren't serious. However, that life took a very grown up, very serious detour when Amy found herself expecting the unexpected and pregnant age 24. Pregnant and without a boyfriend. And so her life took on an altogether new direction...Here in Confessions of a Single Mum, Amy debunks single mum myths, delves into the world of dating (nothing ruins sexy sofa snogging ambience like the watchful eye of Daddy Pig), going back to work just ten days after giving birth, lactating WAY too close to Simon Cowell, as well answering the questions that come with having a family that is anything but nuclear.Amy's wonderfully frank, honest and hilarious story will inspire other parents to own their single status as well as anyone whose life has thrown them a curveball.

Eat, Drink, Run.

Bryony Gordon
Authors:
Bryony Gordon

The new hilarious and inspirational memoir from Sunday Times no1 bestselling author Bryony Gordon.Bryony Gordon was not a runner. A loafer, a dawdler, a drinker, a smoker, yes. A runner, no. Yet somehow, as she began to recover from the emotional rollercoaster of laying her life bare in her mental health memoir MAD GIRL, she started to realise that getting outside, moving her body and talking to others for whom life was also an occasional challenge, might actually help her. Going for a run might not banish her sadness but at least it might show it that she was damn well trying to beat it, which is sometimes half the battle. As she began to run further she started to see the limitations she had imposed on her life more clearly. Why couldn't she be a runner? Or a bungee jumper? Or a deep sea diver? Maybe rather than sitting on the sofa watching the world go by, fulfilling your dreams was just about standing up and taking that first step. Maybe you can do it too.In April 2017, less than a year after she had weighed herself at over 16 stone but stepped off the scales and started training anyway, Bryony Gordon ran all 26 and 3/4 miles of the London Marathon. Here, in her new typically funny and hugely inspiring memoir, she shows us how extraordinary things can happen to us all, no matter what life throws at us, if we're just willing to keep going.

HOPEFUL – an autobiography

Omid Djalili
Authors:
Omid Djalili

Omid Djalili's childhood was unconventional, to say the least. He was raised in a beautiful, chaotic, cramped, colourful and legally dubious guesthouse where his parents fed and watered Iranian nationals flocking to the UK. Over twenty years almost 2000 'cousins' passed through the Djalili's doors and the young Omid played translator to each. Although these years taught him a lot about the rich tapestry of life, this parenting by committee led to a slightly chequered school career which saw Omid taking his A levels a record six times and eventually fake his own university entrance papers. Desperate to be free of his cramped living quarters he escapes to the University of Ulster where he lives a life of wonderful solitude.Full of the warmth and intelligence that makes Omid such a successful comedian and sought-after actor, this memoir takes us on an incredible and laugh-out-loud funny journey through an unusually British life.

Toast & Marmalade

Emma Bridgewater
Authors:
Emma Bridgewater

Emma Bridgewater's cheerfully distinctive kitchen pottery - manufactured and traditionally hand-decorated in the Staffordshire Potteries, just as it would have been 200 years ago - has found its way onto the dresser shelves and kitchen tables of homes all over Britain and beyond. Her designs are jaunty, friendly, sometimes quietly funny. They call to mind childhood picnics, summer gardens and busy kitchens, with their motifs of Sweet Peas and Figs or bold calligraphic patterns such as Toast & Marmalade. Above all the name Emma Bridgewater suggests home and welcome. This book combines beautiful photographs of Emma's life and designs with a collection of warm stories of her family, along with the inspirations for and characters involved in the success of this particularly English brand.

Colin Shindler

Colin Shindler was dealt a cruel hand by Fate when he became a passionate Manchester City supporter. In this brilliant sporting autobiography he recalls the great characters of his youth, like his eccentric Uncle Laurence, as well as his professional heroes. Threaded through these sporting events is the author's own story, which touches on a universal nerve, growing up in a Jewish family, his childhodd destroyed by the sudden death of his mother and his slow emotional recovery through his love for Manchester City. It is a tale that reveals what it is like to be on the outside looking in, with his nose pressed up against the sweet shop window watching the United supporters take all the wine gums.

The Rules of Influence

William Crano
Authors:
William Crano

No one doubts the power of the majority. It makes all of the rules, and most of us are willing to go along, but what happens when you're not? What about those issues that are so important to you that you're willing to take on the naysayers? It doesn't matter if you're trying to market and sell a product or service, persuade colleagues to try out a new business plan, or simply convince your family where to go for dinner - in all of these cases you're going up against the majority. And while minorities fail in countless ways, these scientifically proven strategies will lead you to success. * Working from the inside: Outsiders are easy to dismiss. It's pivotal to work with the majority's interests in mind. * Focusing on the problem: Through persistence and consistency, you have much more power on a single issue even when you're outnumbered. * Cracking the majority: There's no majority without consensus. A single dissenting voice starts hundreds of fractures. By applying the science of persuasion to those moments in your life when you're overmatched, Dr. William Crano--an expert in the field of influence--gives you the tools to overcome overwhelming odds and take back control.
