When war breaks out in 1939, guns and fat barrage balloons invade Hyde Park. The Dulcimer grandchildren are sent into Sussex and they find life at Dulcimer Hall as humdrum as ever – with no excitements or worries about a German invasion and no inkling at all of the dramas developing in the lives of the adults around them.

Into their world comes Maggie Dunlop, a Scottish girl taken on as a nursery maid. Having escaped her violent father she’s soon thriving, adored by the children and well liked by both staff and family. Little does she know that her popularity is sowing dangerous seeds of jealousy or that feelings of affection can grow into a deep yet impossible love.

'Full of atmospheric detail and peopled by memorable characters, it is a book in which to lose oneself' Bookseller

I am completely in love with WAR STORY - what a fantastic book
Jill Mansell
A most wonderful tale of war...a beautiful love story too
Bangor Chronicle
I couldn't have liked it more, especially the way she combines a sweeping story with a wonderful sense of intimacy - I really felt I knew these people and was totally involved. Also, great dialogue...that makes the story come alive. The various settings are so surely and easily evoked, too... Please pass on my congratulations to Sara on her gorgeous book
Sarah Harrison
I devoured WAR STORY with enormous pleasure. What a masterly story-teller Sara Hely is, and how good at creating characters in whom one believes and whose destiny one cares about!
Philip Ziegler
Sara Hely scores high on the credibility rating. But the true test is, does one want to turn the page?- and here our author emerges with flying colours. No, I couldn't put it down
