HOPEFUL – an autobiography

By Omid Djalili

  • E-Book
  • £P.O.R.

A beautifully written, joyously funny memoir about growing up and finding fame as a young Iranian in London.

Omid Djalili's childhood was unconventional, to say the least. He was raised in a beautiful, chaotic, cramped, colourful and legally dubious guesthouse where his parents fed and watered Iranian nationals flocking to the UK. Over twenty years almost 2000 'cousins' passed through the Djalili's doors and the young Omid played translator to each. Although these years taught him a lot about the rich tapestry of life, this parenting by committee led to a slightly chequered school career which saw Omid taking his A levels a record six times and eventually fake his own university entrance papers. Desperate to be free of his cramped living quarters he escapes to the University of Ulster where he lives a life of wonderful solitude.

Full of the warmth and intelligence that makes Omid such a successful comedian and sought-after actor, this memoir takes us on an incredible and laugh-out-loud funny journey through an unusually British life.

Biographical Notes

With a career spanning over three decades, British-born Iranian comic and actor Omid Djalili's legendary performances on stage and screen have won him plaudits the world over.

Credits include the NBC sitcom 'Whoopi' with Whoopi Goldberg, 'Fagin' in West-End smash-hit 'Oliver!', 'Dr Rance' in Joe Orton's What The Butler Saw at The Vaudeville Theatre 2012 and Red in The Shawshank Redemption.

His role as 'Mahmud Nasir' in the international hit 'The Infidel' won him a best actor award at the Turin film festival. Omid also starred in the blockbusting 'Sex and the City 2', 'The Mummy', 'Gladiator' and 'Mr.Nice' among many others.

Further successes include two series of 'The Omid Djalili Show' for BBC One, the first to dive off a 10m board on ITV's hit show Splash! and the release of highly acclaimed DVDs No Agenda, Live in London and Tour Of Duty. Not to mention sell out live tours in 2005, 2008 and 2012.

Egg and Soldiers

Miles Jupp
Authors:
Miles Jupp

Miles Jupp (News Quiz presenter, star of Rev, I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue and The Thick Of It) delves into the mind of his comedy creation Damien Trench - urbane food writer and protagonist of BBC Radio 4's acclaimed sitcom In and Out of the Kitchen.'I have just had one of those absolutely mad mornings when you go out to have a browse at tagines and end up coming home with a brand new gas ring expander. I think I was probably as surprised as anybody. Sometimes life is just like that, isn't it?'Damien Trench is one of the most well-respected cookery writers working today. But what were the formative experiences that sent him on the path to such culinary acclaim? In Egg and Soldiers, Damien opens up for the first time about his childhood - from the blissful early years playing with wooden cookery sets at 'Tiny Steps' nursery, to adolescent struggles (The Swiss Cottage Poo incident and subsequent therapy, a panic attack in a petting zoo, having a clever older sister), to catering college and falling in love with food. Along the way there are postcards from the present, as Damien relates astute observations on the trials of modern life, illuminating conversations with his partner Anthony, and thought-provoking anecdotes from food festivals and the like. At last, the lid has been lifted on one of the most interesting voices in modern cookery writing. (And there are recipes, too.)

The End of an Earring

Pam St Clement
Authors:
Pam St Clement

In January 2012, one of EastEnders' longest-serving and best-loved characters breathed her last when Pat Butcher succumbed to cancer. Her departure from the show gave actress Pam St Clement time to reflect, not only on almost 26 years playing a role that she loved, but also on her whole life.Pam's mother died when she was a baby, leaving her with a father whose life didn't really have space for a child. What followed was an itinerant childhood, with various stepmothers and foster families, before an advertisement in The Lady took 11-year-old Pamela to the farm in Devon that was to become her true home, with the 'aunts' who became her surrogate parents. Time on the farm at Dartmoor, where she discovered her love of animals, alternated with life at The Warren boarding school in West Sussex, where she discovered her passion for acting. On leaving school, Pam was unsure of what direction to take but gradually realised that acting was what she wanted to do with her life. So, in 1966, Pam took up a place at drama school. Pam settled in London and worked on stage and television throughout the sixties and seventies, before her first appearance on EastEnders in 1986 and the offer of a permanent role a few months later. This memoir is far more than simply an actor's tale. Quite apart from her fascinating and unique childhood, Pam also recalls her involvement in the women's movement of the 1970s, her lifelong love of animals and the worries about her weight that have dogged her since her teenage years. It is also a tribute to Pat Butcher, for whom Pam retains a huge affection. This incredibly warm memoir reveals the woman behind the popular EastEnders' character, a woman who, apart perhaps from her earrings, couldn't be more different from Pat.

Toast & Marmalade

Emma Bridgewater
Authors:
Emma Bridgewater

Emma Bridgewater's cheerfully distinctive kitchen pottery - manufactured and traditionally hand-decorated in the Staffordshire Potteries, just as it would have been 200 years ago - has found its way onto the dresser shelves and kitchen tables of homes all over Britain and beyond. Her designs are jaunty, friendly, sometimes quietly funny. They call to mind childhood picnics, summer gardens and busy kitchens, with their motifs of Sweet Peas and Figs or bold calligraphic patterns such as Toast & Marmalade. Above all the name Emma Bridgewater suggests home and welcome. This book combines beautiful photographs of Emma's life and designs with a collection of warm stories of her family, along with the inspirations for and characters involved in the success of this particularly English brand.
