Recipes from the Rum Islands - a fresh, new approach to Caribbean food

When you think of the Caribbean, a hundred beautiful clichés come to mind - white sand, blue sky, salty breezes and balmy nights. But what of the food? Eating is at the heart of Caribbean life: people come together in the kitchen, someone starts cooking and soon there is laughter, music and fantastic food.

Shivi Ramoutar grew up in Trinidad, Leicester and London. As a supperclub host and pop-up chef, Shivi turned to her favourite Caribbean dishes for inspiration. Her recipes are a wonderful melting pot of flavours: traditional Coconut Chicken Rundown sits alongside Red Bean and Spinach Mac 'n' Cheese and Baked Eggs Creole. Her food is fresh and zingy, exciting and exotic, but also satisfyingly homely and hearty. And not forgetting the fun -
Salted Tamarind Caramel Sundae, Smashed Banana Pancakes and Peanut Butter and Jelly Cheesecake - without which the book just wouldn't be Caribbean.

Biographical Notes

The Guardian has dubbed Shivi the 'Caribbean Food Supremo' and Shivi continues to host her own events, including her *Lime supperclub in London as well as for Jamie Oliver's Food Foundation, plus pop-ups at Feast Food Festival and a takeover at Le Coq.

Shivi also teaches Caribbean cookery classes at Divertimenti and her recipes have already been featured in the Guardian, The Sunday Times, Delicious, Good Things magazine and Metro.

Shivi was also a contestant on Masterchef in 2013.

Shivi's food is bright, colourful and hugely evocative
of the deliciously spiced 'Caribbean' food that I have
grown to love whenever I visit that part of the world.
I want to eat everything in this book.

— Thomasina Miers
It's here! It's here! Shivi Ramoutar's AMAZING debut book. — Sabrina Ghayour
Shivi specialises in light, modern recipes that showcases the most vibrant ingredients from the area and her new book, Caribbean Modern, celebrates this type of cooking, while remaining true to the hospitable Caribbean spirit. — Telegraph Food
Caribbean Modern should convince any doubters that there is far more to the cooking of the rum islands than jerk chicken and mutton curry. — House & Garden
If you've got the music, the flipflops, the shades and the sunny disposition, all you need is a spread of something special and you'll be "liming". Liming, as Trinidadian supperclub host Shivi Ramoutar puts it, is the specifically Trinidadian art of doing nothing, accompanied by bountiful food and drink. Ramoutar's recent debut cookbook, Caribbean Modern (Headline), is brimming with recipes that can make that happen: buttermilk fried chicken, jerk pulled pork and watermelon salad, crab backs and fried bakes, all bold flavours and bright colours to bring the islands to your picnic rug. — Guardian Cook

The Last Palace

Norman Eisen
Authors:
Norman Eisen

For any reader of Edmund de Waal's THE HARE WITH THE AMBER EYES or Erik Larson's IN THE GARDENS OF BEASTS, Norman L Eisen's THE LAST PALACE tells the story of the tumultuous past 100 years in Europe as seen from the most beautiful house in Prague, the Petschek Villa. The Petschek Villa was Norman L Eisen's home during his tenure as US ambassador. In his remarkable book, he details the colourful lives of five of the palace's residents: - the optimistic Jewish financial baron who built the Petschek Villa after World War I as a statement of his faith in Europe, and who died of a broken heart after Europe rejected him, his house, and his hopes- the cultured, complex German general who occupied the palace during World War II, ultimately saving the house and Prague itself from destruction- the American ambassador and Holocaust hero who protected the property after the war, acquiring it for the U.S. amid the turmoil of the Communist takeover of Czechoslovakia - his successor 40 years later, an iconic former child star who used the house as her stage to help the Velvet Revolution succeed in restoring Czechoslovak democracy- and the author, Norman L Eisen, the son of a Czech Auschwitz survivor, who moved into the palace once seized by the Nazis and found himself battling the lingering ghosts of European intoleranceThe Last Palace weaves a tapestry that is as vast and as intricate as any that hang in the palace itself. It is also an exploration of the wider themes in international history that have triggered three global wars (two hot and one cold), and threaten the peace of our world today.

Cherish

Anne Shooter
Authors:
Anne Shooter

'Sesame & Spice is an absolute treat; full of warmth and generosity, and so many recipes I want to cook, that I've been headily immoderate with my post-it notes!' Nigella Lawson'If you're a fan of Ottolenghi and Sabrina Ghayour, you'll love this' BBC Good Food magazineThe recipes in Cherish are the food that Anne Shooter cooks for her family - the cookbook that her daughters wanted her to write. Full of love and generosity, the recipes are a delicious array of flavours from the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Jerusalem. They come from Anne's Jewish background and the times her family and friends come together to eat, celebrate and feast. With the same warm, home-style cooking of Sabrina Ghayour's Persiana, Olia Hercules' Mamushka and Emma Spitzer's Fress, Anne will open up a world of bold flavours but simple ingredients. Recipes that you will want to cook over and over again.'Every Friday, like my mum and my grandma, and her mother before her, I cook a delicious, comforting dinner for my family and friends. My recipes come from my Jewish roots, but I have written them for the modern table, drawing from the street foods of Tel Aviv to all the Jewish communities around the world to the meals my family have now made their own. I cook these recipes whenever we have friends or family over - a weekday one-tray supper of chicken, aubergine and bulghar wheat, a Sunday lunch of lamb shanks with apricots or roasted peppers with chickpeas, quinoa & feta for a vibrant dinner I can turn around a veritable feast of a dinner in a couple of hours because these recipes are tried and tested by generations of cooks before me, recipes I will be passing on to my daughters for their own families one day, I hope, and that you will to yours. This is indeed a book inspired by my Jewish roots, but above all, it is a book of food to make for people you love.'

Two Kitchens

Rachel Roddy
Authors:
Rachel Roddy

From the award-winning weekly Guardian Cook columnist and winner of the André Simon and Guild of Food Writers' Awards comes an Italian food book of sumptuous recipes, flavours and stories from Sicily and Rome. For the last twelve years, food-writer, cook and photographer Rachel Roddy has immersed herself in the culture of Roman cooking, but it was the flavours of the south that she and her Sicilian partner, Vincenzo, often craved. Eventually the chance arose to spend more time at his old family house in south-east Sicily, where Rachel embraced the country's traditional recipes and the stories behind them. In Two Kitchens Rachel celebrates the food and flavours of Rome and Sicily and shares over 120 of these simple, everyday dishes from her two distant but connected kitchens. From tomato and salted ricotta salad, caponata and baked Sicilian pasta to lemon crumble, honeyed peaches and almond and chocolate cake, they are the authentic Italian recipes that you will want to cook again and again until you've made them your own.'This is a recipe book that reflects the way I cook and eat: uncomplicated, direct and adaptable Italian family food that reflects the season. The two kitchens of the title are my kitchens in Rome and Sicily. In a sense, though, we could have called the book "many kitchens" as I invite you to make these recipes your own.' My Kind of Food

John Torode
Authors:
John Torode

My Kind of Food is a very personal book from John Torode, full of the food that he loves to cook and eat, recipes that he makes away from the cameras and professional kitchens. In John's words:'My world as I know it started with my Nanna's roasting tin, a chicken and a wooden spoon. The food she cooked was always simple, but delicious. Her cauliflower cheese was awesome, her caramel slice wonderful and I am still searching for a recipe to make her apple tea cake. So life started simply for me. Since then I have cooked in professional kitchens, run my own restaurants and done a lot of telly. Some of you may have eaten in my restaurants, some may have seen me on MasterChef, but I guess that not many of you know what I really cook for myself and my friends and family. This book is about how I cook at home and the chapters reflect me and the things in life I love - how I eat and how I cook. At its heart, it is simple, but it's definitely also influenced by my years in restaurant kitchens. I don't tend to define my food by type or style. I guess you could say that these are my real favourites - a behind-the-scenes look at my own kitchen!' BRUNCH TO LUNCH The Aussie in me is all about eating through the morning. My perfect day starts slowly - if breakfast is the meal of kings, then brunch is the food of emperors. FOR THE FAMILY Although I am a professional cook, I have a number of dishes that I rely on at home. They are all tried-and-tested, some are posh, some are simple, but all are favourites. IN A RUSH I cook every day, but sometimes it needs to be quick and easy. But there's no reason why a quick meal should not be tasty. STORES AND LEFTOVERS Great food is created from necessity. Open your cupboards and look for the potential in your fridge. For many a minefield, but for me a gold mine. These are the recipes I know well from being a boy and watching in wonder what could be made with a bit of this and a bit of that. Not complicated just delicious.ALL OUTSIDE Well, I am an Aussie. Some of the best food in the world is cooked outside, where having fun is as important as cooking. AND TO FINISH I love a good dessert. A proper steaming pudding with thick custard or real ice cream. It's all about being a kid and not caring about sugar and spice. Cakes and tarts and pies and lots of them.

Honey & Co: The Baking Book

Itamar Srulovich, Sarit Packer
Authors:
Itamar Srulovich, Sarit Packer

Our day is marked by what comes out of the pastry section, and there's always something good on the way: sticky buns full of cherries and pistachios in the morning; a loaf of rich dough rolled with chocolate, hazelnuts and cinnamon that has been proving since dawn and comes out of the oven fresh for elevenses. Lunch is a crisp, crumbly shell of pastry filled with spiced lamb or burnt aubergine, and at teatime there are cheesecakes and fruit cakes, small cakes and massive cookies - so many cakes that it's hard to choose one. (There's no need to worry, whatever you choose will be great!) After dinner there might be poached peaches with roses or something more traditional, sweet and salty Knafe drenched in orange blossom syrup, or maybe just a small piece of fresh marzipan. There's something sweet, something in the oven for everyone, all day long - welcome to Honey & Co.Chapters include:How to be good at baking: general notes; Store cupboard; Sweet & savoury breakfasts; Elevenses; Lunch; Teatime; Traditional desserts
