The Handmade Mind

By Maggie Jackson

  • Paperback
  • £14.99

Crafting slow thought in an age of speed.

We are constantly bombarded with new information about the benefits of taking breaks devoted to meditation, yoga, and other stress-relieving practices. But, more often than not, these moments of calm are exactly that - blissful, fleeting periods that interrupt the grind of life. We relax, we unwind, we decompress, and then we get right back to work. In nearly every arena speed is king.

Rather than encourage us to take time away from our day to slow down and breathe deeply, Maggie Jackson's THE HANDMADE MIND: Crafting Slow Thought in an Age of Speed inspires us to integrate slow thinking and reflection into all of our daily activities.

Combining extensive research with historical perspective, her narrative draws from an often surprising and illuminating variety of arenas, frommedicine to wood carving. Her book will explore the ways in which we can craft our waking (and sleeping) hours to maximize awareness and make space for versatility, serendipity, and true creativity.

THE HANDMADE MIND is not a manifesto about the dangers of technology, but rather a way forward that recognizes the limits and constraints of automation. Instead of trying to train our minds to be more machine-like, Jackson urges us to hone the skills that are uniquely and irreplaceably human, and harness the power of slow thought.

George Lucas

Brian Jay Jones
Authors:
Brian Jay Jones

As The Last Jedi hits the screens, pick up George Lucas by Brian Jay Jones, the first comprehensive telling of the story of the iconic filmmaker and the building of his film empire, as well as of his enormous impact on cinema. At once a biography, a business manual, and a film history, George Lucas will, for the first time explore the life and work of a fiercely independent writer/director/producer who became one of the most influential filmmakers and cultural icons - a true game changer. On May 25, 1977, a problem-plagued, budget-straining, independent science fiction film opened in a mere thirty-two American movie theatres. Its distributor - 20th Century Fox - were baffled by the film. The film's production had been a disaster from nearly day one, hampered by bad weather, malfunctioning props and ill-fitting costumes. But its release on a quiet Wednesday in May of 1977, changed cinema forever. The film was Star Wars. The fiercely independent thirty-three year-old George Lucas was just getting going. Determined to control every element of the film-making process he had founded Lucasfilm ltd., in 1971. Among his hits, Lucas gave us six Star Wars films and four featuring the globetrotting archaeologist Indiana Jones. Together these ten films have earned more than $6 billion worldwide and won some of the largest and most devoted fan bases ever seen. In 2013 he sold Lucasfilm to Disney for $4.05 billion. Along the way the man who invented the Blockbuster also gave us computer generated imagery (CGI), created a small animation company called Pixar and reinvented the way movies were made, marketed and merchandised.

After Alice

Gregory Maguire
Authors:
Gregory Maguire

After Alice by Gregory Maguire, the bestselling author of WICKED, is a wonderful retelling of what happened next after Alice disappeared down the rabbit hole. An entertaining spin on Lewis Caroll's classic tale of Alice in Wonderland, this novel will delight fans of Angela Carter. When Alice fell down the rabbit-hole, she found Wonderland as rife with inconsistent rules and abrasive egos as the world she left behind. But how did Victorian Oxford react to Alice's disappearance?Gregory Maguire turns his imagination to the question of underworlds, undergrounds, underpinnings -and understandings old and new, offering an inventive spin on Carroll's enduring tale. Ada, a friend mentioned briefly in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, sets out to visit Alice but, arriving a moment too late, tumbles down the rabbit-hole herself. Ada brings to Wonderland her own imperfect apprehension of cause and effect as she embarks on an odyssey to find Alice and bring her safely home from this surreal world below the world. The White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat and the bloodthirsty Queen of Hearts interrupt their mad tea party to suggest a conundrum: if Eurydice can ever be returned to the arms of Orpheus, or if Lazarus can be raised from the tomb, perhaps Alice can be returned to life. Either way, everything that happens next is After Alice.

The Road Beneath My Feet

Frank Turner
Authors:
Frank Turner

*The Sunday Times Bestseller**Featuring an exclusive new chapter*On 23 September, 2005, at the Joiners Arms in Southampton, Frank Turner played his last gig with his hardcore band, Million Dead. On the laminates that listed the tour dates, the entry for 24 September simply read: 'Get a job.'Deflated, jaded and hungover, Frank returned to his hometown of Winchester without a plan for the future. All he knew was that he wanted to keep playing music.Cut to 13 April 2012, over a thousand shows later (show 1,216 to be precise), and he was headlining a sold-out gig at Wembley Arena with his band The Sleeping Souls. Told through his tour reminiscences, this is the blisteringly honest story of Frank's career from drug-fuelled house parties and the grimy club scene to filling out arenas, fans roaring every word back at him. But more than that, it is an intimate account of what it's like to spend your life constantly on the road, sleeping on floors, invariably jetlagged, all for the love of playing live music.
