Marine Conservation Society (Author)
The Marine Conservation Society is the UK's leading marine charity. We grew from the hard work and forward-thinking of a number of people who, in the 1970s, could see the harm being wreaked on our marine environment. We started out as the Underwater Conservation Society and became the Marine Conservation Society in 1983, led by marine scientists with a network of dedicated volunteer supporters. Our role is to educate and inspire people to change their habits, opinions and preconceptions to help preserve our oceans for generations to come. We've treated our seas with too little respect for too long - too many fish have been taken out, too much rubbish put in. Now our seas are paying the price for the years of neglect and unrestricted damaging activities, with rising levels of pollution and species in decline. Our work has resulted in the creation of marine protected areas around the UK, plastic carrier-bag charges to reduce litter and supermarkets being more aware of the need to stock sustainable seafood. We've made sure that more people than ever know the dangers of marine litter, especially plastic litter.

Falter

Bill McKibben
Authors:
Bill McKibben

'This is Bill McKibben at his glorious best. Wise and warning, with everything on the line. Do not miss it' Naomi Klein, author of This Changes Everything and The Shock DoctrineThirty years ago, Bill McKibben wrote The End of Nature, the first book that alerted us to the dangers of climate change. Falter is a new call to arms, to save not only our planet but our very souls as well.Over tens of thousands of years, through the harnessing of nature, the development of civilization, and the application of new technologies, human beings have created the world we live in. But as McKibben points out in this provocative and sobering look at the world today, we are fast approaching a tipping point, putting into question the viability of humanity itself.McKibben argues that we have failed to recognize how individual actions often operated against our collective interest, and as a result we now face three daunting challenges - to adjust to a new life on a broken planet, to fight the hyper-individualism that now animates government and business; and to reverse the ways that technology is bleaching out the variety of human existence. He asks if we still retain the tools and social capital to fight these larger forces - and if we are willing to make the effort.

'Anyone who has any interest in what we eat, how we produce it or how we should manage the landscape for our children should read this book' Monty DonWhat is it about the humble pig that holds such a special place in our hearts? In a frosty field on the longest night of the year, eight little piglets snuffle their first breaths, and jostle close to their mother to feed...Over the six months that follow, lifelong farmer Helen Browning and her partner Tim Finney record their adventures to show how pigs become the mischievous, competitive, intelligent and inventive animals that we know them to be. In doing so, they demonstrate why it is so crucial that the welfare of our farm animals - and equally, the way we manage our countryside - takes centre stage in the contemporary discussions around food, climate change and the loss of wildlife. Lyrically told and drawing on a lifetime's worth of knowledge, this is a timely and entrancing exploration of our relationship with farm animals, with nature, and with life itself. If you liked The Secret Life of Cows and A Shepherd's Life, you'll love this evocative and illuminating tale

The Water Book

Alok Jha
Authors:
Alok Jha

Water is the most every day of substances. It pours from our taps and falls from the sky. We drink it, wash with it, and couldn't live without it. Yet, on closer examination it is also a very strange substance (it is one of only a very small number of molecules which expand when cooled). Look closer again and water reveals itself as a key to a scientific story on the biggest of canvases.Water is crucial to our survival - life depends on it - but it was also fundamental in the origins of life on Earth. The millions of gallons of water which make up our rivers, lakes and oceans, originated in outer space. How it arrived here and how those molecules of water were formed, is a story which takes us back to the beginning of the universe. Indeed, we know more about the depths of space than we do about the furthest reaches of the oceans.Water has also shaped the world we live in. Whether it is by gently carving the Grand Canyon over millennia, or in shaping how civilisations were built; we have settled our cities along rivers and coasts. Scientific studies show how we feel calmer and more relaxed when next to water. We holiday by the seas and lakes. Yet one day soon wars may be fought over access to water. The Water Book will change the way you look at water. After reading it you will be able to hold a glass of water up to the light and see within it a strange molecule that connects you to the origins of life, the birth (and death) of the universe, and to everyone who ever lived.

Dealing with China

Hank Paulson
Authors:
Hank Paulson

DEALING WITH CHINA takes the reader behind closed doors to witness the creation and evolution and future of China's state-controlled capitalism.Hank Paulson has dealt with China unlike any other foreigner. As head of Goldman Sachs, Paulson had a pivotal role in opening up China to private enterprise. Then, as Treasury secretary, he created the Strategic Economic Dialogue with what is now the world's second-largest economy. While negotiating with China on needed economic reforms, he safeguarded the teetering U.S. financial system. Over his career, Paulson has worked with scores of top Chinese leaders, including Xi Jinping, China's most powerful man in decades. In DEALING WITH CHINA, Paulson draws on his unprecedented access to modern China's political and business elite, including its three most recent heads of state, to answer several key questions:How did China become an economic superpower so quickly? How does business really get done there? What are the best ways for Western business and political leaders to work with, compete with, and benefit from China? How can the West negotiate with and influence China given its authoritarian rule, its massive environmental concerns, and its huge population's unrelenting demands for economic growth and security?Written in an anecdote-rich, page-turning style, DEALING WITH CHINA is certain to become the classic and definitive examination of unlocking, building, and engaging an economic superpower.
