What We’re Watching: The Almighty Johnsons Season 3

This is a series you really, really can’t miss. Because it’s wonderful.

The Norse gods have been exiled from their homeland and are living in New Zealand. Each of them comes into their god-aspect on their 21st birthday, and from then on have minor but effective powers. However, should Odin (one of the Johnson family boys) find his true love the goddess Frig, then the gods shall reclaim all of their powers and it will be – more or less in the words of the series – totally awesome.

Of course the path of true love never runs smoothly, and as this new series kicks off we see exactly how dreadful it can be when a god – also a regular bloke – thinks they have found it and then discovers that perhaps (of course) it’s all a bit more complicated than that.

The Almighty Johnsons is smart, funny and addictive viewing with plenty of meddling relatives, love problems, work problems and even an incident of a tree growing out of a sofa to keep the action lively. I laughed out loud, I’ve been on the edge of my seat, and I can’t wait for episode three, aired this evening on the SyFy channel!

You can read an interview with Dean O’Gorman (yes, the one from The Hobbit) here: and if you missed season one you can check out the trailer here.
