Love Wins

The Lovers and Lawyers Who Fought the Landmark Case for Marriage Equality

By Jim Obergefell and Debbie Cenziper

  • Paperback
  • £14.99

The personal story behind 'Obergefell V Hodges', the most important civil rights case of our time.

Twenty-one years ago when Jim Obergefell walked into a bar in Cincinnatti and sat down next to John Arthur, the man who would become the love of his life, he had no way of knowing that following the sad loss of John to Motor Neurone Disease his fight to have their marriage recognised on John's death certificate would lead him from the courthouses of Cincinnati to the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court and ultimately into the history books.

Jim Obergefell is representative of the 32 plaintiffs in the case "Obergefell v Hodges", arguably the biggest civil rights case of our time, which in June this year saw same-sex marriage recognised across every US state. Here Jim teams up with long-time friend and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Debbie Cenziper of The Washington Post to tell his story.

LOVE WINS is a legal thriller and love story focused on ordinary people in game-changing circumstances, part Erin Brockovich, part Milk, part Still Alice. It is a story about marriage, grief, courage and the law, but mostly it's about a promise made to a dying man who needed to know that he would be remembered. Through insider accounts and access to key players, LOVE WINS will reveal the dramatic and previously unreported events behind the Supreme Court case that bears Jim's name. The poignant narrative will chronicle how a grieving man and his small-town lawyer, confronted with overwhelming legal, political and personal setbacks, won the most important gay rights case in U.S. history.

He was heavily involved in local charities and historic preservation.

Luis Suarez: Crossing the Line - My Story

Luis Suarez

Luis Suarez

Luis Suárez was a young boy already in love with football by the time his family moved from the countryside to Uruguay's capital, Montevideo. The guile and trickery of the street kid made an impact with the country's biggest club, Nacional, before he was spotted by Dutch scouts who brought him to Europe.Suárez was lured from Ajax to Merseyside by another iconic number 7, Kenny Dalglish. From that moment, he terrorised Premier League defences, driving a resurgent Liverpool towards their most exciting top-flight season in 24 years. But there is another side to Luis Suárez: the naturally fiery temperament which drives his competitiveness on the pitch. Banned from football for four months, derided by the press, he was marched out of the country. In the summer's final twist, he became one of the most expensive footballers of all time, moving from Liverpool to Barcelona. The Ocean at the End of the Lane

Neil Gaiman
Authors:
Neil Gaiman

WINNER OF THE SPECSAVERS NATIONAL BOOK AWARDS 2013 BOOK OF THE YEAR The Ocean at the End of the Lane is the bestselling magical novel from Neil Gaiman, one of the most brilliant storytellers of our generation and author of the epic novel American Gods, and the much-loved Sandman series. 'Possibly Gaiman's most lyrical, scary and beautiful work yet. It's a tale of childhood for grown-ups, a fantasy rooted in the darkest corners of reality' (Independent on Sunday). If you loved the mesmerising world of Erin Morgenstern's The Night Circus or were drawn into J.K. Rowling's magical universe, this book is for you. It began for our narrator forty years ago when the family lodger stole their car and committed suicide in it, stirring up ancient powers best left undisturbed. Dark creatures from beyond this world are on the loose, and it will take everything our narrator has just to stay alive: there is primal horror here, and menace unleashed - within his family and from the forces that have gathered to destroy it. His only defence is three women, on a farm at the end of the lane. The youngest of them claims that her duckpond is an ocean. The oldest can remember the Big Bang. The Ocean at the End of the Lane is a fable that reshapes modern fantasy: moving, terrifying and elegiac - as pure as a dream, as delicate as a butterfly's wing, as dangerous as a knife in the dark.
